What To Wear In Your Car This Winter
Go Cozy Chic
To stay healthy in body and mind, it’s more important than ever to get up and go, which starts with getting dressed. Winter’s here and that means time to prepare for cold months ahead and that means one thing: layer up. Once on the move, the inside of a car is an ideal place to cocoon. Once inside, peel off layers for the body to breathe. That means clothing that’s comfy, chic and ready to wear. We pulled together a list of some of our favorite staples made by brands big and small, affordable and fancy that mix and match well. It’s all about making and entrance (or exit) in comfortable style this winter season.
BODY
Sweatshirts and hoodies have become go-to staples as we live with the intention of being perpetually ready to squeeze in a workout. Now that we’ve worn out our stash, we’re looking to upgrade and add a little splash of color and soft fabrics to shake off drab days. The Aliya Wanek sweatshirt makes us feel happy, and the organic, cotton, handmade blend is what we want next to our skin.
We were skeptical about the promise of Naadam sustainable ethical hand-washable cashmere sweats, until we received a pair as a present last year. The hype is real. Now we’re wearing them ALL the time— even at writing —and considering a second pair. Cashmere doesn’t require a dry cleaning. We rinse them in the sink and revive them like new. Check out the recyclable hoodie and joggers. A quick brush helps clean up any shedding that happens after sitting for hours in a seat.
We loved a J Crew Sweater Blazer sweater blazer back when we worked in an office, and swear it makes any outfit look more polished and put together. Now, working from home a few days a week, we go from the bedroom to the couch to the car, and still wear this sweater blazer as a layer when we want to have a more pro look. It's a comfortable, light layer for those unseasonably warm winter days that are all too common.
Gap Softspun Joggers are an everyday uniform now. Because they're knit, these joggers are cute without looking sloppy. They're breathable and wash well — we throw them in the dryer, and two years later they're still going strong.
In an effort to look put together, we’ve made the mistake of wearing compression leggings during long car rides and usually end up undressing after about an hour, when our stomachs starts to ache. For a pricier and more luxe version of the joggers, the Lululemon On The Fly Jogger look more polished, while still offering the same level of comfort.
FEET
Yes, winter boots are important for trudging through weather, but in the car you can slip on anything. We’ve hung up our heels for now and gone all sneakers. It also turns out that it’s easier to drive in sneakers than heels that can get worn down by the angle of the pedals.
We first noticed the Atoms brand on the street this fall. Atoms donated masks to the New York City Housing Authority, Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp, and the United Sherpa Foundation. We love this up and coming sneaker brand. Think vintage Vans meets the functional character of a Euro walking shoe. The soles have a polka-dotted pattern that remind us of a Yayoi Kusama painting, and are well-suited to grip on brake pedals. These shoes come in quarter sizes — the company’s selling point. If the shoes fit, it’s probably a pair of Atoms.
We’ve all heard a lot about Allbirds wool loungers, but we fell fast for them quickly and immediately bought a second pair. They're just about the most comfortable sneaker ever — and they're reasonably priced, environmentally friendly, and washable, too. While wool may be too warm for summer, its an ideal alternative to boots, which can be cumbersome to wear on a long drive.
Lately we’ve rediscovered the fun of shoe-shoes, and really there’s nothing better than Tod’s gommino driving shoe made in wool for winter. These decadent, snuggly, and chic shoes have rubber pebbles on heels meant to protect the foot when easing on and off the pedal.
We didn't used to care about socks, that is until our cheap Amazon socks all tore at the big toe and shrunk, leaving us to toss them one by one. We also hate spending more than we have to on items like this, but since Bombas gives away a pair of socks for each one purchased, we can try to rationalize spending $39 for 6 pairs -- also, they're genuinely well-made and comfortable
A Grammy award winning songwriter once told us he liked to wear his Polo socks with the horse facing the inside of his calf, so only he would know what he was wearing. Comme Si makes expensive, sustainable trouser socks for women in decadent materials. During winter months, this is a splurge that actually has comforting functionality unlike many status driven buys. We favor the Agnelli collection. What’s better: One well made pair of socks that last several seasons or ten pairs that bite the dust in a matter of months?
ACCESSORIZE
Coco and Breezy make sunglass categories by shape, which means it’s easy to find the frames that suit our faces. We support any company that once outfitted Prince, and find the shape of the circle sunglasses glamify a low key outfit.
We loves quizzes at Le Car and we like that Warby Parker offers one to help us find the proper pair of shades. They're lightweight, polarized, and easy to wear during an hours-long car-ride.
We are obsessed with Noah’s winter wool hat. Edged with a polar fleece lined cuff and the logo is on front, the hats are made by Moriarty in Stowe, Vermont.
For something extra special on top, go big on the outdoor vibe. We came across this collaboration by Alesandra Rivera x Sidereal Haus, a custom hat inspired by the backdrop of the Grand Tetons found in Jackson, Wyoming.
OUTERWEAR
We first discovered Daily Paper through their Elman Peace collaboration. Now we’re obsessed with their t-shirts that feel like high thread count sheets. We’ve added the Black Monogram Hopuff Long jacket to our wish list. Why? Because the calf length cut is ideal for parking the car and taking a long winter walk. It’s also cool that its made from recycled polyester.
To polish off our ensembles, classic coats have recaptured our hearts. We came across this wool cocoon coat by Everlane, for a simple staple that will carry us through this season in sleek effortless style.
