BMW X1

How it looks on the street: The BMW X1 exudes low-key confidence. Its boxy proportions give it distinct form from every other small SUV on the road that project wagon vibes, a good thing in our book. It’s the entry level model in BMW’s lineup, technically, but it has curb appeal that strikes beyond this distinction.

How it makes you feel when you get in: The X1 interior uses metals to its advantage and when paired with a spicier leather choice — like red— creates a modern effect. The floating center consul prioritizes a screen that doesn’t dominate, but houses most of the interior functions like dual-climate control and ambient interior lighting. The system runs iDrive 9, BMW’s latest ninth generation version of tis infotainment system. We like the addition of the option panoramic sunroof that adds more natural light to the space. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the wireless charging pad is option. Another choice option is the Harman/Kardon stereo.

How it drives: BMW stays true to its driver-forward persona. That means lots of feedback and verve that prioritize the zing. No slouchy comfort here. The standard i28 model we drove produced 241-horsepower. A juiced M35i model makes 312 horsepower. The seven-speed transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Fuel economy for the xDrive 28 is 35 miles per gallon on the highway. M35i is 31 miles per gallon.

Space for people and things: Boxy proportions all around lend to good space in front and back seats. The 26-cubic feet of storage is solid for this small SUV class.

What should you compare it to: Volvo XC40 and Mercedes-Benz GLB.

How much does it cost: Base prices is $39,000 and with options like the Premium Package that price lands around $50k.
