Subaru Ascent
How it looks when you see it on the street: The Subaru Ascent earns high marks because it checks so many boxes on midsize SUV shopping lists. From safety to space that’s the message it send from the outside in. Here to serve a party of 7 or even 8.
How it makes you feel when you get in: There are days where we feel like we’re on top of everything — groomed, orderly and totally in charge. That’s the feeling of climbing in the Ascent. The ample space, the spartan design, the basic Subaru infotainment experience. It’s not frilly or precious, just a solid cabin experience.
How it drives: True to its nature, the Ascent gets people where they need to go. It doesn’t promise big spirited performance, but does the job for schlepping around town. It’s standard all-wheel drive and well suited to the Northeast, AKA Subaru country. It earns 20 to 27 miles per gallon, a reminder that while fuel economy has a long way to go, it’s much improved over models past.
Space for people and things: Generous. For the spatially challenged families that need lots of places to stash gear, things and people, Ascent wins. This holds true when a third row is added.
Best Features: We like the water repellent seats in the Onyx edition — perfect for an outdoorsy family.
What should you compare it to: Kia Telluride and the Honda Pilot.
How much does it cost: It starts at $32,000 and runs up to $45000 fully loaded.
