BMW XB7 Alpina

How it looks on the street: It’s a custom character and a way to have a big of a presence in the oft redundant luxe SUV category, which in many ways is the best of both worlds as a combo of functionality and flash. The Alpina B7 has the elements of a more thoughtful, bespoke ride that’s also has the body styling of a badass, underscored by the all caps ALPINA Logo on the lip of the grill and bold 23-inch wheels.

How it makes you feel when you get in: The good feels start with the soft touch Lavalina leather steering wheel and the smooth of Myrtle Luxury Wood. A blue digital instrument cluster with green accent and a crystal glass gear selector illuminated in blue rounds out the cabin. The B7 is objectively a well-designed environment.

How it drives: It’s all about power and suspension, which goes low, an acquired taste for some, particularly Sport Model style. In Sport Plus Mode, it drops down low to give it a track-like vibe and can be driven in Comfort and Comfort Plus drive modes for a more cruising friendly feel. The B7 zooms from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and a top speed cause the engine to produce a pleasant rumble

Space for people and things: A generous three-row for full grown bodies. Our model had cabin seats, which gave us lots of elbow room for our five passengers on board.

What to compare it to: Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63, Lexus TX 550h, Land Rover Range Rover.

How much does it cost: $150,245 all in with two-dozen options, as one might expect at this price point. These options range from driving assist features to niceties such as an illuminated kidney grille. The Bowers & Wilkins system ($3,500) and cabin seats ($750).
