Volkswagen ID.7
How it looks on the street: The snazzy ID.7 is Volkswagen’s new electric flagship. It marks a concerted effort to level up the design pedigree of VW’s electric portfolio that started off with the ID.4. When VW showed the ID.Aero1 concept in 2022, it essentially shared what it planned for the design direction of ID7 and we’re happy to say not much has changed in the exterior look from concept to production model. The swooping lines improve aerodynamics, harkening back to the concept’s identity.
How it makes you feel when you get in: It’s a new vibe for the interior that borrows from some of tech the VW group has learned from the success of Porsche Taycan. The 15-inch screen frames the cabin experience, and is augmented by the voice-control system. The Ergo seats are comfortable, and stay cool or warm given the passenger’s preference, but optional. Materials are sustainable and ambient lighting adds to the mood in a cockpit that feels clean and uncluttered. Similar to the Porsche Taycan is an intuitive air conditioning system that uses sensor in the windshield to monitor the sun’s angle and adjust temperature accordingly. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standards. Rear cabin has connected options, like climate control and USB-C charging.
How it drives: The ID.7 delivers a zippy, responsive ride. It has the good character responsiveness that is typical of EVS, but still has a complete feeling. It’s a pleasure to drive around town and whips around traffic with assurance. It has a projected and healthy 435 miles of range — we only spent a day driving it so look forward to learning more on a longer go around.
Space for people and things: It’s a roomy sedan, and the sort that makes the case for why sedans make great family cars. Trunk space is solid.
What to compare it to: Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3, Kia EV6, BMW i4, and the Hyundai Ioniq 6.
How much does it cost: It’s estimated to be about $55,000, though not yet confirmed. It goes on sale in the US market this summer.
